Introduction
A world leader in integrated, high technology land defence systems, Vickers Defence Systems (VDS) enjoys an industrial heritage dating to 1847 and ranging from submarines and aircraft, through ships and tanks, to prestige cars such as Rolls Royce. Today, VDS is responsible for a diverse group of products and services, including: armoured vehicles and sub-systems; training and simulation; bridging; logistic support; proof and experimental ranges; and systems integration.
The Problem
All projects involve risk of some sort. This may stem from the nature of the work, the type of resources available, the contractual relationships which are in place, or from political factors (either internal or external) which influence the project.
The Solution
Orchid Software developed an intranet-based Risk Register that is used to capture and identify the principal risks faced by the business, and prioritise them in such a manner as to escalate the most significant risks up to the Executive.
The objectives of the Executive Risk Register (ERR) are to
Facilitate as broad and accurate a picture as possible of the key risks faced by the business
Enable full visibility by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the risk the business perceives itself to face
Provide a summary of the most significant risks faced by the business in a form suitable as an Agenda item for Executive Meetings
Information on risks is fed upwards, from Senior Mangers (employee Grade E) and above via a strict reporting hierarchy. The ERR uses the user data within Orchidnet to identify a user's grade and reporting chain.
Features
Risks are visible only to the originator and those above them in the reporting chain except at the Executive level where special rules are applied.
A risk may not be changed by other users in the reporting chain and only revisions may be created
Each risk includes a complete summary of all revisions made by each user
User may submit comments on any risk revision
Users are restricted to submitting no more than three risks of 'Top' priority and cannot submit more than 10 open risks

“The Risk Register provides the board with a snapshot of all that is of concern within the business. Because it's so easy to use and administer, our staff participation was immediate, enthusiastic and beneficial.”
