Founded in 1912, the Sharp corporation has grown to become one of the leading names in the fields of LCD and electronics research, development, manufacture and retail.
As one would expect, the organisation has a number of international branches with their own technical focus. Part of the global network of Sharp Laboratories, Sharp Laboratories of Europe is the United Kingdom-based arm of their development operations; as a research centre for consumer electronics, development is focused on creating new technology in liquid crystal displays, semi-conductor lasers, language and encryption software and consumer bio-science.
Such technical focus meant that Sharp Laboratories of Europe were aware of the potential for improvement that intranet usage would have for their business operations; conversely, such a large organisation and specialised field of work meant that any system would have to include a highly-developed range of functionality to meet the resulting business requirements.
Sharp Laboratories of Europe were clearly aware of this, and came to the procurement process with a clear idea of the features that a new intranet would include; based on this, it was felt that Orchidnet PRO would meet all requirements expressed.
The procurement process also included a requirement for cross browser compatibility to include the Mozilla-developed Firefox browser as well as Microsoft Internet Explorer; at the time, such development was underway within Orchid Software, and cross-browser compatibility quickly became an integral part of this Orchidnet installation, as well as a standard option for other Orchidnet intranets as of May 2007.
Installation, implementation and content population began earlier this year, and the Sharp intranet is due to go live in mid-2007. |
